About LYMT

Llandudno Youth Music Theatre, (LYMT) aims to educate and develop Musical Theatre skills of singing, dancing and drama in order to build confidence and promote a lasting interest in Theatre and the Arts. Children and young people have a tremendous talent for all aspects of Musical Theatre and deserve a platform to experiment, have fun, learn and grow in confidence.

The History

Llandudno Youth Music Theatre (LYMT) was founded in 1978 and is one of the longest established youth music theatres in North Wales. It is a registered charity 701723 and operates on a voluntary basis.

LYMT provides : A music based Youth Theatre for young
people from Llandudno and the surrounding area.

An opportunity for young people to work with experienced tutors.

A valuable method of enriching the cultural activities of Llandudno and the surrounding area.

Encourages: Young people to work together as a
community and experience the practical workings of Musical Theatre and its skills and disciplines.

Develops: The linguistic skills of young people through the
craft of Musical Theatre.

The individual talents within the theatrical environment.

Llandudno Youth Music Theatre achieves this with a performance group and musical theatre skills workshops.

The performance group is for young people aged from 14 – 19 living in the Llandudno and surrounding area. The group meets at the Craig Y Don Sports and Community Centre. Entry to this group is by audition.

The group has performed in a variety of venues across North Wales, in Cardiff and has also performed in Wormhout, France as part of the Town Twinning.

Over the years many musicals have been performed including ‘Annie’, ‘Barnum’, ‘Copacabana’, ‘Back to the 80’s’ and ‘Seussical’. In 2000 the members wrote a musical ‘Dreams’ and in 2003 a specially commissioned musical ‘Hot Wheelz!’ was written to celebrate the 25th anniversary.

LYMT has been a winner of the Young Musical Theatre Singers of the Year competition organised by the Welsh Amateur Music Federation on three occasions since 2001. The group has also performed at the Millennium Centre in Cardiff.

In 2006 a new skills workshop was started for children aged 5 – 16, Stage Notes. These sessions teach skills in drama, singing and dance/movement to give the children confidence, an enjoyment of musical theatre and drama, a sense of community and to enable them to work as a team.
LYMT owes a great deal to all the people who have helped the group develop over the years and achieve the standard now being obtained.

The Llandudno youth Music Theatre is a member of the National Operatic and Dramatic Association(NODA) www.noda.org.uk and the Welsh Amateur Music Federation tycerdd.org/wamf.htm
